2009/04/15 - Tradie in a Cute Ute, Not So Beaut...Survey

It would seem that both tradies and those who use their services agree. The authenticity of a tradie’s tools says much about the tradie. In a recent survey by Mahindra Automotive Australia (MAA), distributors of the Mahindra Pik-Up utility vehicle, 41% of respondents said that a tradie who drives a sturdy work horse ute was way more likely to instill trust in a client and be perceived to be hard working.

15.9% of survey participants said that a “flashy” ute would make them suspicious of a tradie and believe that they may overcharge or rip them off, whilst only 10.1% believed that a high end ute gave the perception that the tradie was doing well and was good at their job.

Claire Tynan, CEO, MAA said, “A workhorse ute adds a touch of genuineness to a tradie, over a sleek, high end, and showy ute, of which we suspect the days are numbered. In these tougher times, our research found that people appreciate utes that present value for money, can do the job and are fit for their purpose, without the hefty price tag. 71.1% of the respondents said that in a recession tradies will definitely think twice about buying a high-end ute and will be looking for cheaper alternatives that are just as good.”

And tradies agreed with this sentiment. When asked if they aspired to own a high end ute, the majority at 47.7% said that they preferred hard working, honest utes as they projected the type of persona they wanted to present, and the vehicles often do the job for much less. 21.3% said that it would be nice to own a higher end ute, but thought that tough times ahead will mean having to “recession proof” their business. This meant being sensible and buying a good, sturdy, cost effective ute. 9.2% said it would be a “nice to have” but only in addition to their workhorse vehicle.

Ms. Tynan continued, “Tradies are also opting to buy a rugged, yet highly spec’d ute, and are creating a personality and uniqueness to it by customizing the look through accessories. However, when choosing to do so, they’re conscious of not over accessorizing and losing the hard working image that the vehicle offers. In addition, we’ve been getting feedback from tradies and dealers that as a smart business decision, two work horse utes are bought for what buyers were previously prepared to pay for one, which is a clever choice in a harsh economy.”

In March, the Mahindra Pik-Up range went on sale offering sensational model run out deals. These prices have now been extended with many incentive deals available at dealer level. The “Trick Up Your Pik-Up” free accessories pack valued at over $500 is being offered with any single cab 4x2 model purchase.

The entry level price is $16,990 for a vehicle that is built for Australian conditions and is larger than the competition. With many colours to choose it also offers ample standard features including limited slip differential on both two and four wheel drive models, air conditioning, four wheel-drive electrically-engaged and automatic hub locks, power steering, power windows, remote central locking and superior sound system with full CD/MP3/SD/USB player.
