Aboriginal Sacred Sites

When visiting either a well developed site in a National Park, or perhaps a little known area you’ve found hidden away somewhere in the bush, remember:

  • Rock art sites are extremely vulnerable to damage, and most are already in the process of slow deterioration. It is important not to touch the art work or to stir up dirt or dust around them.
  • Stay behind any barriers or fences that have been erected, and stick to any marked trails.
  • Keep children under control and try and get them to understand the significance of the area.
  • If you find a site, which you believe may not have been recorded, report it to the nearest Aboriginal Affairs Office.
  • Additionally, as if anyone needs reminding - all sites are protected by law and fines up to $5,000 apply.
